A Song That Make Me Fall Asleep

I don’t fall asleep to music, but, as I mentioned on day 5, I used to sing my kids to sleep.  There were five songs I’d sing in rotation – I Wanna Be A Friend (Pal) Of Yours, Rockabye Baby, Mockingbird, Littlest Bird and Somewhere Over The Rainbow.  Some nights I’d sing each song twice and I’d have an armful of sleeping baby.  Others, I’d be singing for an hour, each song over and over again, their little bodies fighting sleep in order to listen to just one more song.

A few weeks ago my sister got married and her and her new husband danced to Somewhere Over The Rainbow for their first dance.  That song obviously has meaning for them, but it also means something to me.  When it began, I got just a little bit misty eyed thinking about rocking my babies to sleep singing that very song to them and how there’s no going back to that time when they were small enough to be cradled in my arms and trusting enough to allow me to sing them softly into sleep.

There have been many beautiful versions of the song over the past nearly hundred years, the original being one of the greatest, but the one my sister and her husband used was gorgeous.  I’d heard it only once before and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s has quickly become my favourite variation.  Such a beautiful, soothing, gentle song.
